Description
Deep in the valleys of Hunza, a small wild fruit grows without any farming, no irrigation schedules, no pesticides, no intervention. The locals call it Gindawar. The rest of Pakistan knows it as Russian Olive. Outside the country, it goes by silver berry, sometimes wild berry. Whatever name you use, this is one of those ingredients that has quietly sustained mountain communities for generations before the rest of the world started paying attention.
Ours is wild-grown and sun-dried in Hunza Valley, which means no artificial drying, no additives, and nothing added to preserve colour or extend shelf life. What you receive is the fruit exactly as nature produced it, just dried slowly under the high-altitude Hunza sun until the moisture leaves and the natural sugars concentrate.
There are two varities available, the imported ones, which are larger in size and the desi ones which re smaller in size.
What Russian Olive Tastes Like and How to Eat It
Fresh Russian Olive tastes crisp and mildly sweet, close to an apple. Once dried, the texture softens and the flavour deepens into something richer, more like a date but lighter and less heavy on the palate. It makes a genuinely satisfying snack on its own. A small handful in the afternoon is enough. It is one of those snacks that feels indulgent but is actually doing something useful for your body. If you enjoy keeping a variety of Hunza snacks at hand, it pairs well alongside our mixed dry fruit pack, which brings together several wild-harvested ingredients from the same valleys.
You do not need to prepare it or cook it. Open the pack, eat a few, and that is it.
Russian Olive Benefits Worth Knowing
Russian Olive has a long history in traditional medicine across Asia and the Middle East, and modern research is starting to catch up with what those cultures already knew.
- Sleep and calm: it contains compounds including saponins that are linked to improved sleep quality and reduced anxiety. If sleep support is something you are actively looking for, our lemon balm tea and chamomile tea work well alongside Russian Olive for the same purpose.
- Digestion: The fruit is a good source of dietary fibre, which supports healthy digestion and keeps your gut moving the way it should.
- Immunity: it is high in Vitamin C and antioxidants, both of which support immune function and help your body manage oxidative stress. For an even stronger Vitamin C boost from a Hunza source, our sea buckthorns are one of the most concentrated natural sources of Vitamin C you will find.
- Blood and energy: It contains iron and other minerals that contribute to healthy blood and sustained energy. If you are looking for other iron-rich options from Hunza, our dried mulberries are worth a look for the same reason.
Russian Olive Benefits for Female Health
Russian Olive benefits for female health have been recognised in traditional Chinese and Unani medicine for centuries. The fruit has historically been used to support blood health, hormonal balance, and general vitality in women. Its iron content is particularly relevant for women who need consistent dietary sources of this mineral. Its calming compounds also make it a natural fit for anyone dealing with stress or disrupted sleep.
If you are building a broader wellness routine around women’s health, our herbal PCOS tea and red raspberry leaf tea are worth looking at alongside Russian Olive . And if mineral support is a priority, our page on mineral support for women covers some useful ground on how Himalayan minerals contribute to female health specifically.
Russian Olive in Pakistan
Russian Olive in Pakistan is widely available in bazaars, but the quality varies significantly depending on the source. Most commercially available dried Russian Olive in Pakistani markets comes from large-scale farms where the fruit is harvested early and dried quickly. Wild-grown from Hunza is a different thing altogether. The growing conditions, the altitude, and the slow sun-drying process result in a fruit with a more concentrated flavour and a cleaner nutritional profile.
The Russian Olive tree does not grow in cultivated orchards in Hunza. These trees grow on their own, in the wild, and the fruit is hand-collected by people who have been doing this for generations. That is the sourcing story behind every pack we send out.
A Note on Russian Olive Leaves
While our product contains only the dried fruit, it is worth noting that Russian Olive leaves are also used in traditional herbal practice, particularly for skin health and as a mild topical remedy. If you are researching the Russian Olive plant more broadly, the leaves, bark, and seeds each carry their own traditional uses. Our focus here is the fruit, which is the most widely consumed and studied part of the plant.
Available in 300g and 500g packs, both shipped across Pakistan. If you have been looking for a clean, honest snack that actually comes from where it says it does, this is a good place to start.
